About Vieux

In his native land, Vieux was an outstanding performer, leading many ballet troupes, creating and performing complex musical arrangements and ‘marking’ the beautiful dance as part of the ‘ballet’.

See him here with the Internationally acclaimed ‘Bougarabou’ a largely Guinean performance troupe performing a short piece in Senegal.

Ansoumana ‘Vieux’ Bakayoko is a master musician. A djembe player and musical director, he also plays and teaches Doundoun (see him at Tribe of Doris and Drum Camp this year), Bolon (the West African base harp) and Krin (wooden log drum form Guinea).

His djembe workshops take you to the heart of this ancient tradition and all his students are encouraged to understand not just the djembe but the doundoun and the songs and the meaning of each piece they learn.

Equally at home on the corporate stage and the primary school classroom, Vieux is CRB checked and holds musicians guard insurance and is a member of the musicians union.

He teaches regular school and college workshops as well as appearing at UK festivals and delivering weekend and week long classes for serious learners. Please see the Africa page for details of Vieux’s annual trip to Senegal and Guinea. For booking information visit the contact page.
